A selection of the best events in Dublin 2016.

Much of 2016 is dominated by the 100th centenary celebration of the Easter Rising in 1916. There will be many events throughout Ireland and events in Dublin 2016 where the main action of the rising took place, are no exception. Various political parties and groups will be holding celebrations, each one claiming to be the true voice of republican Ireland.
Away from the politics, numerous theatre, music and dance events will have Easter 1916 as their theme.

Commemorating the Women of 1916

Date: Tue, 8th March 2016 12:00pm – 5:00pm
Venue: Richmond Barracks, Kilmainham
Richmond Barracks have been researching the history of women and the 1916 Rising. Commemorating the Women of 1916 will include the unveiling of a commemorative quilt remembering the 77 women of Richmond Barracks.

Date: 9th March 2016 – 23rd April
Venue: Abbey Theatre
This is the a look at the lives of ordinary working class Dublin people at the time of the Easter rising, seen through the eyes of O’Casey’s famous characters.

Reading of The 1916 Proclamation

Date: Tue, 15 March 2016 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Venue: Trinity College
Trinity College Dublin marks the centenary of the Easter Rising with a public reading of The Proclamation on the steps of the old Dining Hall 100 years after the original event took place.

Ceremony in the Garden of Remembrance

Date: Sat 26th March 2016 12:00pm – 3:00pm
Venue: Garden of Remembrance
In memory of fallen fighters, people caught in the crossfire, civilians and children who died as a result of the fighting. With music, poetry and readings.

Easter Ceremonies at the GPO

Date: Sun 27th March 2016 12:00pm – 3:00pm
Venue: GPO, O’Connell Street
This is the main public event commenting the Easter Rising in Dublin.
There will be a reading of the Proclamation in the same place which Padraig Pearse stood in 1916, as well as a wreath laying ceremony by the President of Ireland, a march past by members of the Defence Forces, An Garda Síochána and other State Emergency Services and a fly past by the Air Corps.

Irish Citizen Army and James Connolly

Date: 29th March 2016
Venue: Liberty Hall
There will be a ceremony at Liberty Hall to commemorate the role of the Irish Citizen Army and James Connolly.

Date: 27th January – 31st January 2016
Venue: Temple Bar area
This is the 11th year of TradFest – showcasing traditional and folk music performed by established and up-and-coming artists in a full programme of events suitable for families. The 1916 theme will be a big feature this year.

St. Patrick’s Festival 2016

Date: 15th January – 20th March 2016
Venue: Various throughout the city
St Patrick’s Festival celebrates Ireland’s national identity, arts and culture with numerous events featuring best of Irish and international talent and entertainment culminating in the famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Dublin Dance Festival

Date: 17th May – 28th May 2016
Venue: Various city centre
Pieces by Greek choreographer Patricia Apergi, a contemporary ballet by Alonzo King at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and a new dance-theatre work by choreographer Crystal Pite are among the many spectacular productions during this dance festival in Dublin.

Date: 20th July – 24th July 2016
Venue: RDS Ballsbridge
The Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show is one of Ireland’s biggest annual sporting events with over 100,000 visitors. Not just show jumping but numerous other family activities including live music and entertainment, fashion events, a shopping village, restaurants, bars and snack areas.
Please note that accommodation in the immediate vicinity of the RDS is usually fully booked out for this festival so it is advisable to book your accommodation early if you want to stay near the RDS.

All Ireland Hurling Final

Date: 4th September 2016
Venue: Croke Park
One of the biggest days in Dublin’s sporting calendar as the finals of one of the fastest and most exciting team games in the world are held. 80,000 fans expected.
